CHARGEABLE WEIGHT CALCULATOR

Shipping costs often hinge on more than just scale weight. Our free Chargeable Weight & CBM Calculator lets you build shipments with multiple package lines and instantly see each carton’s cubic volume (CBM), actual weight, volumetric weight, and the final chargeable weight. Avoid surprise carrier charges and optimise packaging before you book.

Chargeable weight calculator

Add one or more package lines to calculate total volume (cubic metres), actual weight, volumetric weight, and the final billable figure.

Shipment setup
This changes the volumetric conversion factor. Carriers compare actual weight to volumetric weight and bill whichever is higher. Sea freight is usually billed by “weight or measure”.
Air uses 167 kg per m³. Road uses 333 kg per m³. Courier uses 200 kg per m³. Sea uses weight or volume (W/M).
Used when you add a new package line. You can still change units on any individual package line. This setting only pre-fills new lines to save time.

Most services bill the higher of actual weight and volumetric weight. Sea freight is commonly billed by weight or volume (whichever is higher).

FAQs

What is “volumetric weight”?
It’s a weight-equivalent calculated from your package dimensions. Bulky items take up more space, so carriers often bill based on volume even if the cargo is light.

Why does sea freight look different?
Sea freight is often billed by “weight or measure” (W/M): the higher of total cubic metres (m³) or total tonnes (1,000 kg).

Can I mix units?
Yes. Each line can use its own units. We convert everything to centimetres and kilograms for the calculation.
